Overview
AISUS mobilised to Qatar to complete a comprehensive inspection of a Firewater Lift Caisson. The project included three distinct stages to deliver accurate results within a single operation. The initial stage involved an internal visual inspection to assess the overall condition of the caisson. This was followed by high-pressure (HP) jetting to remove marine growth, and finally, ultrasonic testing (UT) to detect any potential structural defects and provide in-depth wall thickness reporting.
Requirements
The client required an urgent inspection to confirm the Firewater Lift Caisson’s safety and structural integrity. AISUS conducted a remote internal visual inspection and UT to measure wall thickness and identify any anomalies. The inspection covered the entire length of the caisson, from the top through the splashzone and down to the termination grille.
Solution
AISUS began with a visual inspection from the caisson’s top to its termination, identifying any obstructions and assessing the extent of HP jetting needed. The HP jetting removed marine growth and scale buildup from the sidewalls, providing a clean surface for accurate UT readings. AISUS then performed UT thickness measurements along the caisson, allowing for detailed wall thickness data, including readings where the internal coating remained intact.
Results
The visual inspection revealed significant marine growth, which was fully removed during the cleaning process, enabling optimal UT measurements. The inspection also uncovered a blockage in the termination grille, which was cleared, ensuring an unobstructed water intake path. The internal coating was found intact from the top down to 33.20 meters, with damage observed below this depth. Additionally, twelve circumferential welds were recorded, all of which showed no anomalies. The UT results indicated no significant wall loss, confirming the caisson’s good condition.
